Learning How to Be A Good Boss |

BY DENNIS VICARS, CEO, HSMC
I have been blessed in my life to work for some of the best and worst leaders (and managers, in that order) in this country. All gave me something which has aided me in my own leadership role and which hopefully has been beneficial to this organization and the people I interact with on a daily basis.
One early mentor, shortly after I had been promoted to District Manager, asked me if I knew why I had been promoted. After giving some half-baked answer about my knowledge, he stopped me and said, “No you didn’t get promoted because you know how to be a District Manager, you got promoted because you have the ability to learn how to be a District Manager. Just don’t forget one thing --- your greatest potential asset is your ability to work with people. To meet objectives, reach goals and perform over the long haul in a people business you have to work with, not over people. Grow them, develop them and work for their interests. Which in turn is your interest. The golden rule, where you treat people the way you want to be treated. That means respect, being a resource and showing an interest for their concerns.” I looked at Tom oddly and said, “I always thought those were the things I did.” His reply was simple, “It is, that’s why you’re now a District Manager. I just don’t want that shiny new star on your chest to change you. Power for some people seems to make them forget how they got there.” Don’t forget what got you there. Your experience and ability got you there. Your long-term success will be dictated by your management style not how well you can “boss” somebody.
